Frederick R Miller Lorry Driver Saves The Day

October 19th, 2015

Andy Yarrow, 51, from Guildford, who works for Frederick R Miller, was driving on the southbound carriageway in his HGV on Monday October 19 when he spotted a car in the outside lane with its hazard lights on.

“When I got to where the fellow was, he was in the outside lane and he looked in a precarious position, I saw him just sat there," Mr Yarrow explained.

“He said the police were coming and the RAC were coming to rescue him and I said 'You cannot sit there so I will push you to the side of the road and get you out of the flow of the traffic'.

“It was just instinct to help him.”

In video footage filmed from a dashcam in Mr Yarrow's vehicle, he can be seen pushing the car, with the driver steering inside, from the outside lane over to the side of the A3 at an entry slip road.

“I was surprised no-one stopped just to allow us to get to the side and out of the way, I was more concerned about that," Mr Yarrow said.

“They could see what I was trying to do. All they needed to do was stop and let me push him.

"The cars that were stuck behind him came shooting past and the cars up the slip road were shooting past.

“We forced our way across, I thought 'someone will stop in a minute'.

"I didn't think of any dangers, I wanted to get the fellow out of the way so the traffic could flow and make it easier to be rescued at the side of the road then sat in the outside lane.

“I had put it on my Facebook just to show my friends how unbelievable people are, they didn't just stop so I could push him across the road, they could see what I was doing.”

The video was also picked up by the 'Idiot UK Drivers Exposed' Facebook page, where it received more than 2,000 comments and more than 1,500 shares.

There was praise for Mr Yarrow's actions as well as condemnation for other motorists.
Laura Clewley commented: “Shocking really how many people were in a rush to go round and not one helped to push the car to safety.

"Any of us could be in that situation, wonder how they would like it if it was their dad or grandad scared in the car? Well done to the guy who helped him.”

And Danny Keenan posted: “Common sense was used to help a man who was clearly stuck on a busy road. Good work.”

Mr Yarrow said: "He was scared out of his wits, I put my thumbs up and he put his hands up to say thanks. I would do it again."
